Background

Due to the vast distances involved in wilderness safaris like those operated by Kwando Safaris in Botswana, care should be taken, in making sure that you have selected the best access options for your circumstances. All Kwando Safaris Botswana camps are only accessible by air (for special circumstances).

Most guests access Kwando Safaris camps from Maun, Kasane, Livingstone, Victoria Falls or another camp in Northern Botswana. The table below is designed to show you the choices that you have when booking your flight transfers. There are other options, a full charter from outside Botswana.

Please note that all light aircraft transfers operate on tight arrangements and the transfer times are only fixed the day before the flight unless it is meeting a scheduled departure - Unless you choose a private charter.

Light aircraft transfers:

Kwando Safaris has airstrips near each of our camps. These airstrips are open to all charter companies and for private flights. All flights have specific baggage weight restrictions. For more information please refer to the table below

Air transfer type Stops en route Baggage Restrictions Who controls the times
Seat rate Up to 3 stops 20kg including hand luggage At charter companies discretion
Route rate – for 2008 only – up to 4 pax Up to 3 stops 20kg including hand luggage At charter companies discretion

Private Charter Direct point to point Limited by plane type and passenger numbers At the guests convenience

Essentially there are 2 main choices for light aircraft transfers in Botswana and Livingstone. The first is called "seat rate" and involves buying a seat on a plane from your starting point to your destination. However, this can involve multiple stops with departure and arrival times designed to suit the charter company. Most guests when they become aware of the alternative prefer the second option of a “private charter

A private charter can be offered by Moremi Air and this undertakes to do the following:

  • Depart at a time that suits the guest.

  • Go point to point without multiple en route stops.

A private charter has a minimum charge of 600 km per day. The dead legs on all these planes can and will often be used by charter and safari companies in order to move staff and freight. This is essential in order to ensure that the camps are adequately supplied - especially in the case of Lagoon and Lebala as they are very remote and supply lines are very long. The nearest shop is 250 km away from camp.

Seat rates are competitive for single passengers travelling but for 2 or more passengers the direct transfer is at least similar in price but is often cheaper.
